Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) provides a sufficient number of qualified staff who have the appropriate
education and experience in library and other learning information resources to accomplish the mission of the institution
and the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS)
[1]
[2]
[3].
The library has three professional librarians with degrees from American Library Association (ALA) accredited universities
[4].
These are the Director of Library Services, the Reference Librarian and the Assistant Librarian. Each of the three
librarians has more than ten years of experience in an academic library. The librarians are employed on a twelve-month basis.
Two of the librarians hold a Master of Science in Library Science and the third holds a Master of Science in Library and
Information Studies. The Director of Library Services reports to the Provost and serves on the Academic and Provost's Teams.
In this capacity, she receives information and provides input regarding the academic programs and services of the College.
This information is given to the other librarians and is used to select resources, facilitate services and oversee the
operations of the BSCTC Libraries and the website. The librarians maintain offices at the Prestonsburg location but
travel between the campuses
[5]
[6].
The Prestonsburg Campus Library is the centralized location for collection development, budget management,
acquisitions and technical processing. The library has one library specialist who is responsible for the
technical processing of all collection materials
[7].
There are two library assistants
[8].
One library assistant's duties include bookkeeping, acquisitions, archives and providing assistance at
the circulation desk and computer lab. The other library assistant is stationed at the circulation desk
where she assists library patrons and processes interlibrary loans, reserves and periodicals. A part-time
employee prepares collection materials for technical processing, completes special projects as assigned,
and provides coverage at the circulation desk as needed and during extended hours. She also creates an
index for one of the local newspapers. All staff members participate in stack management.
The Pikeville Campus Library is staffed by two library assistants
[8]
who share duties at the circulation desk and in the computer lab. They provide one-on-one assistance
to students and share stack management duties. One library assistant is responsible for processing
interlibrary loans and reserves. The other is responsible for periodical maintenance and indexing of
the local newspaper.
The Mayo Campus Library is staffed by one library assistant
[8]
and one part-time employee. The library assistant is responsible for reserves, interlibrary loans,
periodicals and stack maintenance. Both employees share circulation duties, assist students in the
computer lab and create newspaper indexes. They are available to provide one-on-one assistance to
students upon request.
Five out of six members of the library's paraprofessional staff have more that 11 years of work
experience in an academic library
[4].
Four out of six have 15 years or more experience. Three of the six paraprofessionals hold Bachelor's
degrees and one is nearing completion of a Master's degree. The other three hold Associate degrees
and are currently pursuing Bachelor's degrees. They receive in-house professional development as
new resources and technologies are adopted, and they participate in college and system-wide professional
opportunities when they are offered.
The three professional librarians are members of the ALA and Kentucky Library Association (KLA). The
Reference Librarian is a member of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA), the Assistant
Librarian is a member of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), and the Director
of Library Services is a member of the Library Administration and Management Association (LAMA). All
three are members of the Academic Section and the Community and Technical College Roundtable of KLA.
These memberships provide them with timely and relevant information through publications, list servs,
blogs and conferences.
All library staff members are trained to provide circulation services at all campus libraries. The
library paraprofessionals rotate among campuses on an as-needed basis. The Director of Library
Services brings all library staff together during each semester to share information, coordinate
schedules and procedures, and update the library plan. This ensures seamless delivery of services
to all students on all campuses and online.
